Although Clemens Food Group has a rich history and a strong presence on the East Coast, we realize that many in the mid-west region may not be familiar with what we do, or more importantly, who we are.

On this page, we try to answer some of the more frequently asked questions we have been asked since announcing our new facility in Coldwater. We’d love to hear from you and answer any additional questions you have. Please visit our Contact Us page to reach out to us…we look forward to hearing from you!

Q: Why did you choose Coldwater, MI for the site of your new facility?

A: Michigan is located in the Eastern Corn Belt and is a central point for available hog supply. Our producer partners have operations in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, which made SW Michigan an ideal and easily accessible location for everyone involved.

Geographically, Coldwater is an ideal location for our group of producer partners, but we feel it also has a strong regional employee base to fill our many job opportunities. In addition, the Coldwater community and elected officials welcomed us and made it clear they wanted us there. Their eagerness to work with us on site selection and site requirements is what solidified Coldwater as the home for our future fresh pork plant.

Q: What type of jobs will be created as a result of your facility?

A: The new plant will create approximately 800 new jobs. We expect nearly all of those jobs will be filled by Michigan residents in the hiring area. These will be jobs that offer competitive wages with the opportunity to work for a company that has an industry-leading retention rate.

There will be a mix of job opportunities available at our plant in Coldwater, ranging from managerial and highly skilled roles, to trades roles, to finance, IT and other admin roles, to hourly positions, all with comprehensive health and additional benefits.

Q: What is the anticipated timeline for this new facility?

A: Here is our anticipated timeline, leading up to the opening of our facility:

  • July 2015 – Ground breaking ceremony
  • August 2015 – Begin moving dirt and ground excavation
  • 2015 – Continued preparation, planning and permitting
  • 2016 – Facility construction
  • Early 2017 – begin accepting job applications
  • 2017 – Equipment installation
  • 2017 – Interviewing, hiring and training
  • Late Fall of 2017 – Plant opening and operations begin

Q: What specific products will be processed in the facility? Where will they be sold?

A: We expect the product line to initially be predominately bulk, fresh pork items. The goal will be to have a balance of customers across retail, foodservice, business-to-business, and export customers throughout the region. Some product will most likely be shipped to our Hatfield, PA facility for further processing.

Providing a high-quality pork product requires strict focus and control throughout the entire process. We believe that this facility will benefit from a partnership that begins at the family farms, and extends all the way through processing. Like with our existing Hatfield, PA facility, it is our expectation that customers will see unmatched quality and consistency across the product line.

Q: How do you support the communities in which you are located?

A: We define our Core Value of Stewardship as “building a foundation for the future”. To us, this not only means taking care of our earth and the environment, we also feel being a good steward means enriching the communities in which we live and work.

We believe that we have been blessed with much and feel a responsibility to give much back. Because of the resources we have been blessed with, we have the ability to touch thousands of lives in our community.

We recognize that only through strong company values and the efforts of our team members does this become a reality. Since 1895, CFG has supported our community in many ways, some of which are financial contributions, product donations, and volunteering of our time and effort in the community.
